NMNH stands for dihydronicotinamide mononucleotide — the reduced (hydrogen-rich) form of NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide). Chemically, it is NMN that has gained an extra pair of hydrogen atoms at the nicotinamide ring. Because it sits on the same NAD+ biosynthetic pathway as NMN, NMNH has become a focus of research as a potentially more efficient way to replenish cellular NAD+.
NMNH vs. NMN: What’s the Difference?
The key difference is oxidation state. NMN exists in an oxidized form, while NMNH is its reduced form. In normal metabolism, the body converts NMN into NAD+ through the enzyme NAMPT. NMNH, carrying additional reducing equivalents (hydrogen), can enter NAD+ biosynthesis through routes that may help bypass some of the bottlenecks seen with NMN alone. In simple terms: NMNH is “one step closer” in the reduced chemistry that leads to NAD+.
